Huntington Palisades, CA
Fashion designer Mary Alice Haney came to Hutchins with a California classic 5,000 square ft Spanish estate, originally built in 1930 for the Doheny family in Huntington Palisades. The house had classic bones and epitomized the indoor-outdoor lifestyle that exemplifies LA living. Creating a space that could be both entertainment hub for Haney’s vast network of friends, as well as a sanctuary to raise her two boys, Hutchins used a thoughtfully curated collection of vintage furniture, textiles and artwork to seamlessly blend with traditional wrought iron accents and Saltillo tile.
Being from Palm Beach, Haney loves shells and palm trees but wanted the house to also have a sophisticated finesse. Key finds are a vintage plaster console by Serge Roche, anchoring an original artwork by Chris Ofili in the foyer; Butterfly by Damien Hirst, which sits over a custom-designed banquette upholstered in Scalamandre cut velvet and a re-imagined dresser from Morocco was repurposed into a sink vanity and paired with hand printed grass cloth on the walls and a beloved hand crafted shell mirror from Palm Beach.
The effect is a home that’s an elegant hybrid of vintage and contemporary; staying true to the pedigree of the estate, infused with vintage and new elements in an idyllic indoor-outdoor setting for which Californian lifestyle is known.
“Kristen has an incredible eye. She brought so much magic to the design process and my house looked chic, layered and gorgeous. As a fashion designer I have a clear sense of what I want my living spaces to look like. However, she always surprised me with ideas I had never thought of.”
